Often considered the ugly stepchild, the house trailer has been relegated to the outskirts of town. But designs like this older mid-century single-wide deserve a seat at the big people’s table. And when you consider how much debris goes into our landfill on new construction, every urban development project needs to consider re-fab alternatives.
Along with fifty undergraduate and graduate architects, Prof. Hughes transformed a run down, discarded trailer into a fabulous proof of concept home without leaving the park!
With an estimated $36,000 in materials, this project gives us an excellent example of what happens when resourcefulness collides with creative thinking.
Now it’s up to us to elaborate and push these designs and concept living ideas even further – right into the mainstream and on down to Main Street. A good place to start might be on an old idea many of us have had, the one where we all chipped in and bought land. Do you recall that dream? I thought you would!
We envisioned community gardens, studio spaces to pursue our music and artistic interest. We just did not envision it in the style of the great American trailer park – we just needed someone like Hughes to show us the possibilities!
Thanks Professor!

Hi Shelah,
Nice site. I live full time in my 1963 Avion H-24. I’ve been doing this for 2 years and about the only thing I miss is a 20 minute shower every once and awhile. I live in Sequim, Wa. so we might be neighbors. Thanks for the site.
Blake.
